Spring Into Hygge

Depending on where you live you might be just warming up after the long winter or, like me, already seeing glimpses of Summer (today’s high is 83 degrees where I live). If you are in the Northern Hemisphere we are in the beginning of Spring and there is plenty to celebrate about the season. So let’s spring into hygge!

What is Hygge

A quick hygge recap for those of you who are seeing this word for the first time. It is pronounced Hoo-ga. hyg·ge /ˈh(y)o͞oɡə,ˈho͝oɡə/. hygge means “cozy”, but it is much more than that. It is a lifestyle, it is about being in the present moment, about togetherness, and focusing on what is most important in your life. To learn more about hygge I added a link below to my intro to hygge post.

Hygge Ideas

Most of what you might read or hear about hygge is focused on the fall and winter seasons. Hygge is synonymous with coziness and common associations are warming by a fire, being in a warm home with loved ones on a cold winter night, or sipping a warm drink. For me, hygge is a lifestyle that can be enjoyed all year. There are plenty of hygge activities to make your spring and summer even better. Spring is actually third down on my favorite seasons list. (I’m a fall, winter, spring, summer, in that order of preference kind of person) That being said, there are still many things I love about spring. And those things that intersect with a hygge lifestyle that I find most enjoyable. So if spring is your favorite season it might be easy to lean into all things spring hygge. But even if spring isn’t so high on your list of seasons I’m sure that there are some hygge activities that you can enjoy.
Spring Hygge
Things I like to do in spring include lighting candles, gardening, napping, kite flying, reading, baking, flower arranging, walking/hiking, crafting, getting together with friends (inside or outside weather permitting), opening all the windows in our house, decluttering, and decorating our house for spring. I know, that is quite a list. And those are all hygge activities. They help us to feel present, to nurture ourselves, create a space at home where we feel good, to connect with nature, or to make memories. Here is a bit more about a few of the things on my list.

Potlucks

There are still some cool evenings in the spring which lend themselves to having dinner inside. Sharing a meal with family and friends is a very hygge thing to do. There are not as many holidays in the spring, so make your own special evening with a potluck. The host doesn’t need to make all of the dishes which simplifies the whole endeavor. Everyone brings their favorite dish to share. If you want to infuse your potluck with more fun you can pick a theme such as taco night, a baked potato bar, a chili cookoff, appetizers only, or a nationality/country like Italian night!

Candles

Hygge is also about light. It might be getting too warm to light your fireplace or maybe you don’t have a fireplace. I love lighting candles year round! In spring I go for floral or fresh linen/cotton scents, while usually I prefer citrus or wood scents. Scents are a very personal thing. Some are allergic or triggered by scents. If so, there are plenty of unscented candles to choose from. Or if you have always wanted to try candle making go for it! You can usually find all of the supplies you need at your local craft and dollar stores.

Walking/Hiking

Spring is my favorite season to walk or hike. Thanks to my daily allergy medicine I can walk amongst the blooming flowers and trees. It is so lovely to see the new buds, flowers appearing for the first time in months, and the trees fill out with green once again. Where I live California Poppies are in bloom and those are my favorite flowers. What is your favorite wildflower where you live?

I would encourage you to ponder what you like about spring and what brings you joy this time of year. Maybe grab a paper and pencil and write a list. Talk with your family. Get a few of those things on the calendar (then they are more likely to happen). Or pick one a week during spring. Have fun with it! Enjoy!

The fun photos on this post were taken by Christina Best Thomas of Christina Best Photography. If you are local to the Sacramento area I highly recommend her. Besides being an amazing wedding and branding photographer, she offers seasonal mini photoshoots throughout the year. Every spring a myriad of camellia trees bloom on the grounds of the California State Capitol. I was lucky to get to do a camellia photoshoot with her. It was so fun! Her website is Christina Best Photography.
